Why should I come to South Korea
Since 1969, hundreds of native English speakers have taught in SDALI schools, integrating themselves into local communities and enjoying the benefits of living in South Korea. Today, many people around the world are choosing to reside in South Korea, and it’s possible for you to do the same. Here are just a few reasons you should consider this beautiful country and how SDALI can take you there.

South Korea maintains a blend of historical landmarks, natural landscapes, and modern developments. There are 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, and a conglomerate of temples, mountains, palaces, and other historic areas across the country. Mountainous terrain exists side by side with Korea's concrete jungles, allowing residents to easily slip away from the city and relax in nature. Hiking culture is prominent among Korean locals which results in clean and well kept trails. In Seoul alone, there are 107 named mountains as well as an abundance of lush parks to explore. Working with SDALI, you’ll have time on your weekends and term breaks to wander through each one. |
South Korea’s natural beauty isn’t its only enticement; the country holds the title of the most innovative country in the world. South Korea’s urban infrastructure prioritizes accessibility, safety, and efficiency. The subway system is globally recognized and able to carry passengers quickly from border to border—usually in under 4 hours. Police stations, post offices, pharmacies, and other civic services are easy to reach and affordable for the average resident.
South Korea also has English services and translators in many establishments, so learning Hangul isn’t required for newcomers. South Korea’s official language, Hangul, is followed by English due to the government’s educational policies. Due to this need and interest in the English language, there is an opening for native English speakers to teach there. Through our institutes and Kinderests, SDALI endeavors to provide Koreans with a well-rounded English education along with a Christian atmosphere. If your heart is set on a mission or career teaching English, SDALI has room for you!
Why SDA Language Institute (SDALI)?
SDALI serves the Korean community in 9 branches all across the country. Throughout the country, the need for English is apparent, but even more so is the need for a wonderful message. Over half of South Koreans state that they don’t have religion with only 20% of the population identifying as Christian. In the classroom, you will meet people from many walks of life: individuals who have left a church, earnest believers, and many who think that God has nothing to offer them. As a missionary teacher, you have the opportunity to reach these students and share the gospel. Your character, a Christlike sincerity and spirit, will influence your students and plant seeds among those all around you.
During their mission year, SDALI will make sure that teachers receive benefits like housing, insurance, and training. They are eligible for an airfare stipend after 12 months, as well as severance pay after their service is complete. Living quarters are furnished, with most schools providing wifi as well. New teachers receive orientation after arrival, which includes discussions about the cultural atmosphere of South Korea, SDALI curriculum training, classroom observation, and chances to mock teach. SDALI will also help new teachers set up a phone plan, health check, bank account, and residence card (ARC) during that time.
At the end of orientation, new teachers will embark for their new schools with the confidence and preparedness to begin teaching students. At each branch, teachers will work with native Korean teachers to ensure a smooth teaching environment. For missionary teachers, they will lead out in vespers and clubs, depending on the focus of their school.
Coming alone may feel frightening, but SDALI teachers can find communities within their schools, religious communities, and teachers in different areas. Teachers can choose their own place of worship, but there are a few groups within the SDALI community that welcome all. Another special benefit of working with SDALI is the annual teachers’ retreat. Teachers will get the chance to meet with teachers located across the country while exploring a new part of South Korea.
